What is ph and how do I balance it?

My best comparison is think of how you balance the water in a swimming pool or hot tub.  If you go into a pool or hot tub that is too acidic, you will have a skin reaction.

Our body is 70% water and we also need to keep it balanced.  The goal is to keep the ph in the middle; not too acidic and not too alkaline either.  An ideal ph is 7.5   So how do you keep it balanced?  With everything you eat and drink!  Everything counts including the water you drink; yes water can be too acidic too.  Some bottles of spring water tested too acidic.

Why do we need to keep our ph balanced?  Cancer cannot live in an alkaline body.  Disease exists when the body is too acidic.  You may wonder, what does that have to do with me?  I only have vasculitis.  Exactly, and vasculitis people are at a higher risk for cancer because our immune systems are comprimised. Most of us are on immuno suppressants.

What foods are acidic?  High on the lists are any with sugar, coffee, bottled juice, alcohol, refined and processed foods, simple carbohydrates such as pasta, white flour, white rice, dairy, most fruits, meat,  and even corn.

There are many more on this list, and some very surprising ones that had you tricked.
Foods like tempeh, nutritional yeast, and fish surprise me.  They are actually very healthy, but are also acidic.  You would not want to eat too much of them.  They are prime examples of food to eat when you can balance them.  If you have fish with your dinner, make sure you have plenty of greens with it to keep your ph balanced.

What are the alkalizing foods?  Almost all greens have a high alkaline content, lemons, limes, green drink smoothies, wheatgrass, barley grass, and sprouts.

The idea is to eat in a way that is balanced between alkaline and acidic foods.  If you know a food you want to eat is acidic; eat a smaller portion and balance it with 70% alkaline foods.

How do you know if you are acidic or what your ph is?  Some of us vasculitis folks have to get our blood test monthly and there is a bright side to that.  You can see what your ph is and keep track of it professionally.  You can also buy some blue litmus paper at better health food stores or whole foods market and do a saliva test at home.

I encourage you to read more on this topic in the "PH Mirace Diet" book by Robert O. Young and Shelley Redford Young.  After reading this book, I am convinced keeping our ph balanced will keep us in better health coping with our chronic disease.  Most importantly, it will help us to minimize the risk of getting cancer.
